Skilled Worker Visa

The UK Skilled Worker Visa is a work visa for international workers with required skills to work in the UK for licensed employers. Replacing the Tier 2 visa in 2020, it now requires a minimum skill level equivalent to UK A-levels (RQF Level 3) in an eligible role.

This long-term visa typically covers up to five years, based on your Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from the sponsoring employer. Your visa remains valid only if you stay in the same role with the sponsoring employer. Changing roles or employers requires a new Skilled Worker Visa.

After five years, eligible visa holders may apply for indefinite leave to remain (ILR), leading to British citizenship one year later.

Key Eligibility Requirements for the UK Skilled Worker Visa

Job Offer: You must have a valid job offer from a licensed UK employer. This job must be in an eligible occupation and meet the minimum salary.

Licensed Sponsor: Your employer must be an A-rated licensed sponsor approved by the Home Office.

Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS): A digital document issued by your UK employer detailing your role and employment terms.

Eligible Occupation: Your job must be on the Home Office’s list of eligible occupations.

Skill Level Requirement: You must have skills at or above RQF level 3.

Salary Requirement: Your salary must meet the standard minimum of £38,700 or the job’s “going rate,” whichever is higher.

Maintenance Funds: £1,270 in your account to support your stay.

English Language Proficiency: Required unless exempt, like nationals from specific countries.

Application Process

Apply Online: Submit your application on the Home Office website, including your job offer, CoS, and required documents.

Fees and Biometrics: Pay the application, biometric, and healthcare surcharge fees. Attend a biometric appointment if needed.

Duration and Extension

The visa is valid up to five years, extendable if you remain with the same employer in the same occupation. Changing employers or roles requires a new visa application.

Path to Settlement

After five years, you can apply for ILR if you meet the residence requirement, continuous employment with your sponsor, and other criteria. Following ILR, British citizenship is achievable after one year.
