Who Qualifies for a UK Student Visa?
To apply, applicants must:
- Be at least 16 years old.
- Have an unconditional offer from a licensed student sponsor.
- Meet the English language requirement (CEFR Level B2 for degree level or above, or CEFR Level B1 for below degree level).
- Have sufficient funds for living costs and tuition without needing public funds.
- Obtain parental consent if aged 16 or 17.
For applicants aged between 4 and 17 wanting to study at an independent school, a Child Student Visa would be more suitable. Contacting an immigration lawyer is recommended for tailored advice.
Approved Courses for Student Visa Applicants
To qualify, students must be enrolled in an approved program, which includes:
- Full-time courses below degree level (RQF levels 3-5) with 15 hours of weekly daytime study.
- Degree level courses or above (RQF levels 6-8).
- Recognized foundation programs for postgraduate doctors or dentists.
- Part-time courses at RQF level 7 or above.
- English language courses at CEFR Level B2 or higher.
Students pursuing PhD-level studies or taking full-time elected roles as Student Union Sabbatical Officers may also apply.
Place of Study and Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)
Study must occur on the sponsor’s premises unless part of a work placement or study abroad program. Once an unconditional offer is accepted, the student receives a CAS reference number, which is required for visa application submission within six months of issuance. The CAS includes key course and financial information and should be unused in previous applications.
Financial Requirements
Students must show funds to cover course fees and living costs:
- Course Fees: Cash funds should cover fees for one academic year (up to nine months). Payments made directly to the sponsor may offset these requirements.
- Living Costs: Inner London students need £1,265 per month (up to nine months), while those outside London need £1,015 monthly. Funds must be held for 28 days ending no more than 31 days before application.
Some applicants are exempt from financial documentation, including those who’ve been in the UK with valid leave for at least 12 months and individuals from specific countries.
English Language and Genuine Student Requirements
Applicants generally need to prove English proficiency via a Secure English Language Test (SELT). Exemptions apply for nationals of English-speaking countries and individuals with prior qualifications taught in English.
The Genuine Student Rule requires applicants to attend an interview to confirm their intent and eligibility, covering topics like study motivation and post-study plans.
Switching, Extensions, and Dependents
- Switching: Those with valid UK leave may switch to a Student Visa unless on restricted visas such as Visitor or Seasonal Worker.
- Dependents: Full-time postgraduate students and Doctorate Extension Scheme students can bring dependents to the UK if courses started before 1 January 2024. Dependents must show financial support unless already residing in the UK or from specified countries.
- Extensions: Current students may apply for an extension if they receive a new offer from a licensed sponsor, particularly at a higher academic level.
Duration of Stay and Work Conditions
Student Visas for degree-level courses usually allow a stay of up to five years, while sub-degree courses are capped at two years. Students on degree-level courses may work 20 hours weekly during term time and full-time outside term, while others are restricted to 10 hours.
How to Apply for a UK Student Visa
Applications from outside the UK can be submitted within six months of the course start date, and those from within the UK may apply three months before. Decisions typically arrive within three weeks for outside applications and eight weeks for UK applications.
