A visa for skilled professionals with a job offer from a UK-licensed employer.
UK Child Student Visa
The UK Child Student Visa is designed for international students aged 4 to 17 who wish to attend an independent school or private school in the UK. This visa route is open only to students attending institutions approved as licensed student sponsors by the Home Office. Normally these will be private funded schools.
For those aged 18 or older seeking further education, the Student Visa may be more appropriate. Alternatively, students aged 16 or 17 interested in courses at or above Level 3 of the Regulated Qualifications Framework may choose between a Child Student Visa (for independent school enrolment) or a standard Student Visa.

Eligibility Requirements for a UK Child Student Visa
To qualify for a Child Student Visa to study at an independent or private school in the UK, applicants must:
- Be aged between 4 and 17.
- Have an unconditional offer from a licensed independent school.
- Have appropriate arrangements in place for care and residence within the UK.
- Demonstrate sufficient funds to support themselves and pay for tuition without public assistance.
- Obtain consent from their parent(s) or legal guardian(s).
Each case is unique, and certain requirements may vary depending on individual circumstances. Seeking advice from experienced immigration lawyers can clarify the exact requirements.
Course Eligibility for Child Student Visa Applicants
To be eligible, Child Student Visa applicants can apply to study:
- Courses aligned with the UK National Curriculum.
- Courses that meet the Recognised Qualification Framework (RQF), excluding foundation courses for higher education.
- Courses recognized as equivalent to the above by education bodies such as Ofsted (England), Education Scotland, the Education and Training Inspectorate (Northern Ireland), or Estyn (Wales).
- Programs meeting the UK’s independent school inspection standards.
Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)
Upon receiving an unconditional offer, the educational institution will issue a CAS reference number. The CAS must be issued by an independent school with a valid license, and applicants should apply for the visa within six months of receiving it. The CAS should include essential information about the course, fees, accommodation, and any tuition payments made.
Financial Requirements for Child Student Visa
Applicants must demonstrate the ability to pay tuition fees and support themselves financially while in the UK. Requirements vary based on living arrangements:
- Boarding students: must show sufficient funds to cover boarding fees for one academic year.
- Living with private foster carers or relatives: carers or relatives must have at least £570 per month for each month of the course, up to a maximum of 9 months.
- Living with a parent on a Parent of a Child Student Visa: applicants need £1,560 per month for each month of the course, plus £625 per month per additional child.
- Independent 16-17-year-olds: must have £1,265 (or £1,334 in London) per month or £1,015 (or £1,023 outside London) for up to 9 months.
Certain applicants, such as British Nationals (Overseas) or those from specific countries, may automatically satisfy financial requirements.
Genuine Student Requirement for 16-17-Year-Olds
For applicants aged 16 or 17, the Home Office applies the “genuine student” rule. This assessment may include questions about education and immigration history, study plans, post-study intentions, and financial support, to confirm a genuine intention to study.
Switching to a Child Student Visa
Current visa holders in the UK may apply to switch to the Child Student Visa route, provided they were not previously granted Visitor, Short-term Student, or immigration bail status.
Application and Processing Times
- Applying from outside the UK: submit applications up to six months before the course starts; decisions are generally made within three weeks.
- Applying within the UK: apply three months before the course begins, and expect a decision within eight weeks.
Duration of Stay and Work Provisions
- Under 16 years old: Visa duration is capped at six years or the course length, whichever is shorter.
- Aged 16-17: Visa duration is capped at three years or the course length, whichever is shorter.
Visa holders aged 16 or over may work up to 10 hours per week during term time and full-time during vacations.
Extensions and Settling in the UK
The Child Student Visa can be extended within the UK, provided the applicant is between 4 and 17 years old, sponsored by an independent school, and has a valid offer from a licensed institution. However, this route does not lead to permanent settlement.
