Requirements for a Visitor Visa

To qualify for a Visitor Visa, you must satisfy UK Visas & Immigration that:

  • You are a visa national (non-visa nationals can typically enter without a visa).
  • You genuinely intend to visit the UK for permitted purposes.
  • You will not engage in prohibited activities during your visit.
  • You have sufficient funds to cover all costs related to your visit (including travel, accommodation, and maintenance) without needing to work or access public funds.
  • You will leave the UK at the end of your visit.
  • You do not intend to reside in the UK through frequent visits.
  • Your application does not fall under the general grounds for refusal.
  • You have obtained an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) if required.

Visa National Requirement

A visa national is someone whose nationality requires a Visit Visa prior to entering the UK. The Home Office provides a list of nationalities that fall under this requirement. Conversely, non-visa nationals, like EU citizens, can seek entry as Visitors upon arrival in the UK without applying for a Visa in advance.

Permitted Activities

With a Visitor Visa, you can engage in several permitted activities, such as:

  • Visiting friends and family.
  • Taking a holiday in the UK.
  • Participating in educational exchanges or school visits.
  • Attending a course of study (not exceeding 30 days).

Intention to Leave the UK

You must demonstrate to the Home Office that you will leave the UK after your visit. Factors they consider include:

  • Previous immigration history.
  • Financial circumstances and ties to your home country.
  • The likelihood of establishing a permanent residence in the UK based on family connections.

Financial Requirements

You need to show that you have adequate funds to cover your visit costs without relying on work or public assistance. Your financial resources can be supported by a third party if they have a genuine relationship with you and can sustain your stay.

English Language Requirement

There is no English language requirement for Visitor Visa applicants.

Validity Period

Visitor Visas can be issued for:

  • 6 months
  • 2 years
  • 5 years
  • 10 years

Multiple entries are allowed during the visa’s validity, but each stay must not exceed six months.

Right to Work

Visitor Visa holders are generally not permitted to work in the UK. You may, however, undertake remote work as long as it’s not the primary purpose of your visit. You can also attend job interviews but must leave the UK to apply for the appropriate work visa if offered a job.

Application Fees

The application fees for a Visitor Visa are as follows:

  • 6-month visa: £127
  • 2-year visa: £475
  • 5-year visa: £848
  • 10-year visa: £1059
